Record-breaking GCSE results for the second successive year at Derby Moor

Derby Moor are proud to report, for the second successive year, the best ever results in the history of the school.

Following the success of GCSEs in 2017, our excellent 2018 A Level results and a “Good” Ofsted inspection in December 2017, Principal Graeme Smith commented “I am so proud and delighted for the entire school, that we have again had amazing success at GCSE. Our staff, students, parents, Governors and the entire community are fully committed to the continuing improvement of Derby Moor.  These results are testament to the focus, determination, skill and tenacity of our staff and students.  Derby Moor Academy is continuing to go from strength to strength at a time when there is significant turbulence in the education system and I am honoured and privileged to lead this magnificent school.”

An impressive 63% of students achieved the “standard” pass of English and maths at grades 9-4 (the equivalent of an old A*-C), while 43% have achieved the “strong” pass at grades 9-5.  These results are once again the best ever in the school’s history, up 4% on last year.  Even more impressive is the number of students achieving the very top grades.  21 students have achieved at least 7 grades at 9-7 (or A-A*), and over 100 students achieved at least 1 grade at 9-7 (or equivalent).  Overall, the school has achieved 48 grade 9s.

Top performing students include:

  • Asim Akhtar: 8 grade 9s, 1 grade 7, 1 A*,
  • Adam Maneely: 7 grade 9s, 2 grade 7s, 1 A*, and a Distinction*
  • Jaya Johal: 6 grade 9s, 2 grade 8s, 1 A*, 1 A
  • Eman Elmeligy: 5 grade 9s, 3 grade 8s and 2 A*
  • Bhavneet Banwait: 3 grade 9s, 3 grade 8s, 2 A*, 1 A and Distinction*

Congratulations also to Liam Johnson, Amber Husband, Umair Khan, Nikhil Khosla, Aron Bharth, Sara Begum, Hamza Iqbal, Kamal Amin, Amanveer Badwal, Ayesha Riaz, Falaq Hussain, Katie Golds, Lucy Pickering, Ntobeko Moyo and Tarandeep Gill who achieved several top grades.

Subjects that performed particularly well include; English, Maths, PE, Dance, Business, Urdu, Panjabi, French and Psychology where all subjects saw big increases in the number of top grades awarded, especially in the key subjects of maths and English where the school saw 20% of students achieve the very top grades.

The Spencer Academies Trust Chief Executive, Paul West, said “at the Spencer Academies Trust we are delighted to celebrate the success of this years A Level and GCSE Students at Derby Moor Academy. The school has not only delivered across the board improvement in many subjects including English, Maths and Languages, this year’s performance represents the schools best ever academic outcomes.”

Tom McDowall, Vice Principal added “our students arrive at Derby Moor significantly below the national average, and these results are above the national average.  Our students apply themselves tremendously and it’s great to see their hard work has paid off with another bumper set of results.  It’s been my pleasure to lead this year group through Year 11 and we look forward to seeing many of them join our oversubscribed sixth form.”

Wendy Coley, Head of Sixth Form, said “these results mean that competition for sixth form places at Derby Moor this year is fierce and we are expecting to be oversubscribed.  Anyone wishing to join our sixth form should contact the school and ask to speak to Mrs Ingleby who will arrange for someone to contact them.”
