All students follow the AQA syllabus, entering GCSE English. The majority of students also enter English Literature. Those students who do not sit this examination are prepared for the Literacy component of the ALAN qualification, a DCSF endorsed functional skills qualification that the Department operate inconjunction with the mathematics Department. Achievement at level 2 in both the Literacy and Numeracy elements is the equivalent of a full GCSE.
Over the two year course students will compile a coursework folder, containing 5 pieces of written work (students who sit ALAN instead of Literature complete 4 pieces) and a selection of oral pieces from which three final pieces will be selected.
Deadlines are set internally, and are designed to allow students the opportunity to draft and re-draft their work, before submission to the examination board. Students are expected to meet deadlines and are encouraged to take responsibility for this as part of their life long learning skills.

During the three terms of Year 11, students will work on the following subject areas in their English lessons. You will notice that the last two half terms, we put time aside to help pupils with their revision. This includes recapping some of the important subjects that they have worked on over the last two years, some past papers to complete as practice and lessons where students can ask us any questions regarding their work over the past years in preparation for their GCSE exams.
