Pupils may borrow 2 books for 3 weeks - all books should be returned to the library on or before the last date stamped inside the book. If you want to borrow a book, take it to the issue desk and have the book issued to you by the library staff. You should never take a book from the library without having it issued to you - un-issued books will set off the security system as you leave the library.

Pupils may reserve books that are already out on loan - ask for a reservations slip, fill it in and hand it back to the library staff. A note will be put in your register when the book is ready for you to collect from the library - it is kept for you for 1 week only.

The computer room in the FLC is open for pupils to use every lunchtime from 1.05 pm - 1.50 pm. Pupils are also able to use this room during lesson time with permission from their teacher, and after school.

The Centre is staffed by Mrs. Hiscock, the Flexible Learning Centre Manager, and Mrs. Stevens, her assistant. If you have any problems or questions about using the Centre, then please ask them for help.

Finding a Book in the Library

There are 2 types of book in the library - fiction (story books) and non-fiction (information books). Fiction books are shelved alphabetically by the author's surname (last name), and non-fiction books are shelved numerically by subject. Reference books are non-fiction books that you cannot borrow and take home with you –these books include dictionaries, atlases and encyclopedias.

There is a card catalogue in the library to help you to find the book that you want. The fiction catalogue has 2 sequences - author and title, both arranged alphabetically either by author or by title. If you want to know what fiction books the library has in stock, look up the author or title in the relevant catalogue draw.

To find a non-fiction book you should use the subject index - this is arranged alphabetically by subject. Look up the subject you want, make a note of the number and then go to the shelves and find a book with that number on the spine.

Book Report

Once you have got a book out of the library, why don't you write a book review on it and hand it in to Mrs Hiscock? We're collecting all your book reports together so you can read each others and see what other students thought of a book you might have read.

Where to Find Information in the Library

Books

Non-fiction books are information books and they are shelved numerically from 001-999. You can find the number for the subject you want by looking it up in the subject index.

CD-ROMs

There is a good collection of CD-ROM titles in the FLC - including encyclopedias and atlases as well as more subject specific titles. If you want to use a CD-ROM and are unsure of what to do, ask Mrs Hiscock or Mrs Stevens for help.

The Internet

The Internet is available for you to use on all PCs in the FLC but make sure that you ask before you use it.
