Trust Status Consultation

Trust Launch

The official launch of Derby Moor as the first Trust School in Derby took place on 16 March 2010 at the Riverside Centre, Pride Park. A Trust School is one which is a Foundation School with a Charitable Trust to support it.

Guests were able to view information stands around the venue which included Learning2Learn, Building Schools for the Future which featured the new school design, Mentoring, the Health, Society and Development Diploma and information from the Trust partners.

We have linked with several organisations in the city - Derby County Football Club, NHS Derby City, Derby City Council Sport and Leisure and Ivy House School. We will ensure that we provide a rounded education for all of our students, supporting their development as learners and as responsible members of the community, raising expectations and contributing to the well being and cohesion of the community we serve. Through a community focus, family learning, family health, vocational and volunteer programmes, the Trust will develop opportunities for students and their families to be involved with the local and wider communities and will engage them in making a positive contribution. A priority of the Trust is to strengthen health and well being through the partners and provide education, health, caring and sport for the community.

Head teacher Wendy Whelan said: "We have already started planning some exciting projects, including partner staff mentoring our pupils. Also, we are encouraging pupils to act as volunteers in community projects. We are an ambitious trust with a whole range of exciting opportunities being made available through our partners." The event included a dance performance by pupils.

The inaugural meeting of the Derby Moor Community Sports College Trust took place on Monday 1st February 2010. At this meeting we are delighted to inform you that the following members were voted onto the trust board with immediate effect.
• Ivy House School – Trustee Mrs Pippa Sillitoe
• Derby County Football Club – Trustee Mr Simon Carnall
• NHS Derby City – Trustee Pam Hallam

Vision

The specific focus of the Trust will be to ensure that we provide a rounded education for all of our students, supporting their development as learners and as responsible members of the community, raising expectations and contributing to the well being and cohesion of the community we serve. Through a community focus, family learning, family health, vocational and volunteer programmes, the college will develop opportunities for students and their families to be involved with the local and wider communities and will engage them in making a positive contribution. Strengthening health and well being by direct work with Trust partners to provide extended sport and health related facilities and activities which support the delivery of common priorities from education, health, caring and sport for our community.

Mission

Community learning

- engaging students and staff in the development of effective Learning to Learn(L2L) and to further develop the school as a community of learners
- to contribute to the economic and social well being of people’s lives with a view to improving health and life chances through education, care, work and training.
Better management of our resources and extension of community engagement supported by foundation status and partner support. The contribution of our partners will be central to improving the prospects of students and families involved with our college. We will aspire to be more than a school: the college will be a resource open as much as possible to the whole community. It will work with other service providers, local businesses and the local authority to contribute to the economic and social well being of people’s lives with a view to improving health and life chances through education, care, work and training.

Every Child Matters

- developing physical and mental well-being and encouraging healthy lifestyles
- making a positive contribution and keeping safe through its courses and programmes
- supporting students through personalised programmes and one to one mentoring to enjoy and achieve
- supporting students to get the most out of their lives and to develop skills and aspirations for adulthood and a sense of social responsibility
The partners in the Trust are committed to delivering the five key Every Child Matters (ECM) outcomes for all young people and with Trust Partners will support all students in being healthy, making a positive contribution and keeping safe through its courses and programmes and through the participatory ethos of the school and its partners, which will develop physical and mental well-being and encourage healthy lifestyles; including 5 hours of physical activity for all students each week. Trust partner backgrounds in caring, health and sport will guide experiences available for students and challenge school strategic planning to incorporate these opportunities and perspectives. Students will be supported through personalised programmes and one to one mentoring to enjoy and achieve, to get the most out of their lives and to develop skills and aspirations for adulthood and a sense of social responsibility – Trust Partner staff will form part of the mentoring team.

Volunteering and contributing

- developing opportunities for students to be involved with the local and wider communities and engage them in making a positive contribution
- developing student voice and participation
- develop ongoing commitment to social justice at the everyday level, and model ways of resolving conflicts and problems, managing behaviour, recognizing the importance of good attendance and helping one another
Through its community focus, family learning, vocational and volunteer programmes, supported by its Partners the college will develop opportunities for students to be involved with the local and wider communities and will engage them in making a positive contribution (assessment and accreditation for pupils’ achievements in this voluntary work will actively be sought). The college will be organised to ensure that there is time, opportunity and a variety of channels to facilitate and encourage effective communication. There will be a strong emphasis on developing student voice and participation. There will be extensive use of buddying and peer support schemes supported by training for students and for staff. These schemes will encourage interaction between students of different ages; develop students’ sense of belonging to and responsibility for the school community; develop ongoing commitment to social justice at the everyday level, and model ways of resolving conflicts and problems, managing behaviour, recognizing the importance of good attendance and helping one another. This approach will be an important aspect of the college’s commitment to Citizenship education and will be supported by real life experiences made available through or informed by Trust Partners to both students and staff.

Professional counseling and expert advice

- supporting students and their families by working in partnership with other agencies and as a specialized part of the staffing make-up of the school
- supporting vulnerable students and families
Better approaches to provision will be developed with partner support. Professional counselling and expert advice will be made available to students and their families by working in partnership with other agencies and as a specialized part of the staffing make-up of the school. Multi-agency approaches will characterize support for vulnerable students and their families and the development of these will be a priority in working with Trust Partners.
